    Over Iwan Henry

    I am a 23-year-old student from the UK on the History Masters course at KU Leuven. I plan to write my thesis on the political significance of secondary school history syllabi of ex-colonial powers, including Belgium, which would make tutoring history to Belgian secondary school students a mutually beneficial academic relationship.

    Earlier this year, I graduated from the University of Leeds with a first-class degree in International History and Politics. The course paid particular attention to the 20th century and allowed me to study a range of topics in depth, from the origins of the First World War to the development of the International Refugee Regime.

    My background in history would allow me to assist tutees in the fundamentals of any essay-based subject from across the arts and social sciences. I am a native English speaker, so I would be keen to tutor those studying my mother tongue.

    I have worked on a one-on-one basis with a variety of different age groups and students with special educational needs. I have two years of experience working as a carer in residential homes for people with dementia and seven years of experience as a support worker for children with autism spectrum disorder. Like tutoring, both of these jobs require clear communication, patience, and empathy.

    Mijn aanpak

    I would first assess the students broad goals—a specific bump in their grades or a general boost in confidence—and then I would break this down into manageable steps that map onto each session.

    In order to encourage independence in learning, I will set a topic for each session, say the Weimar Republic for history or regional dialects for English, and then ask the tutee to spend between thirty minutes and an hour researching the topic outside our sessions. This will allow students to come prepared with any questions they have and allow us to squeeze as much value out of our sessions as possible.

    Often the feedback from essay subjects can be brief and ambiguous, which is why I myself offer to read any essays written for school. I will mark these myself and provide advice on where they can improve; I can focus in on specific sentence structures and arguments, as many overstretched teachers are unable to. I am also happy to set and mark essays better tailored to a student's interests and future prospects.
